ELEMENTAL IMPACT
September, 2011 Newsletter ~ Edition 17

Welcome to the Elemental Impact Newsletter

COMMUNICATION was the September theme! Read below to learn about speaking engagements, website launch, blog post milestones, ZWZ Participant endeavors and other activities. The Ei Team invites you to join the ACTION (and fun!) in the capacity that makes sense for you: a ZWZ Participant, an Ei Sponsor, a ZWZ Ambassador or other avenues available to contribute and make a difference in business operating practices.

Follow the Ei Blogs, The Impact Blog and Zero Waste Zone Blog, to keep current on project status and tales from the journey.

Ei’s Voice Travels

The word is out about Ei|ZWZ’s powerful message and speaking engagements are an integral part of Ei Founder Holly Elmore’s activities. At the Green is Good for Business conference in Columbia, SC Holly spoke on Zero Waste Zones: Mobilizing an Industry to Make a Difference. The Columbia trip was perfect timing to follow-up on the SC Hospitality Association’s August Atlanta ZWZ Tour. See the ZWZ Blog posts, Columbia Rock ‘n in the Green, for details on the conference and ATL Zero Waste Team Hosts SC Hospitality Tour, to learn about the tour. The Ei FB Album, 09-13-11 Green is Good for Business Conference in Columbia, SC, includes conference pictures along with interesting shots from the Columbia visit.

At the Foodservice Packaging Institute's September, 2011 semi-annual meeting held at in Denver, an entire afternoon session, Foodservice Packaging Initiatives: A View from the Outside, was dedicated to education on sustainable packaging facts, trends and available resources. Holly presented on Sustainable Food Court Initiative: Leading foodservice packaging composting and recycling pilots in Atlanta and beyond. The FPI meeting was a fantastic opportunity to communicate the important Ei progress and the upcoming pilot project announcements. See the ZWZ Blog post, FPI Educates on Packaging Evolution for details on the conference and the Ei FB Photo album, 09-21-11 FPI Mtg in Denver, CO, for conference pictures along with cool shots on impressive downtown Denver.

For copies of Holly’s PPT presentations, visit the Ei Speaking Engagements page.

New ZWZ Site Live

The Zero Waste Zones site is live!  With the ZWZ national expansion plans gearing up for a late fall announcement, a separate site was important to clearly communicate program parameters and other pertinent information.

An example of new copy on the site is the Bring ZWZ to Your Community page.  With the expanded navigation, the team has the flexibility  to develop content depth and diversity - stay tuned!

Check out the site and give us your feedback.

ZWZ Blog Tops 20,000 Views!

Yippee – on Sunday, September 18 the ZWZ Blog received its 20,000th page view!
With an escalating page view rate, the ZWZ Blog is a strong communication tool for the shifts in corporate disposal systems.

Supported by the Ei FB albums, the blog documents the milestones achieved on the journey to embrace recycling and recognize the value of materials previously sent to landfills as trash. For a concise recap of the milestone events, players and ACTION that make the ZWZ vision a reality visit the ZWZ Milestone page.

ZWZ Charter Participants Tours

The Zero Waste Zones Team is visiting the Charter ZWZ Participants to learn about their zero waste successes and challenges.  In addition to zero waste initiatives, the participants share their overall sustainability commitment with common and unique projects.

Read the ZWZ Blog post, ZWZ Charter Participant Tours, for a recap of the Sheraton Downtown Atlanta and Georgia World Congress Center tours.  The Ei FB album, Fall, 2011 ZWZ Participant Tours, has great tour pictures – check out the banana (yes live, real bananas) in the the Sheraton’s indoor|outdoor saline pool area!

HMS Host Speaks @ NRA Board Meeting

HMSHost presented at the fall National Restaurant Association's Board meeting to the Sustainability & Social Responsibility Committee.  Linda Dunn, HMS Host VP Supply Chain & Analysis, gave an excellent overview of HMSHost's substantial commitment to sustainability throughout their operations and extending to community service.

Linda wrapped-up her impressive presentation with the role HMSHost's participation in the NRA ConServe Program and Ei | ZWZ | Sustainable Food Court Initiative plays in their over sustainability commitment.  Read the ZWZ Blog post, HMSHost Presents @ NRA Board Meeting, for details on HMSHost and their stated sustainability mission and vision.

Columbia, SC Anaerobic Digester Facility Announced

Columbia, SC is home to one of the first, if not the first, U.S. anaerobic digestion facilities permitted for food residual intake. Thanks to Daniel Rickenmann's ingenuity and tenacity, the W2E Organic Power $23 million facility is set for ground breaking in early fall, 2011 with waste processing beginning in 2012. As W2E's Founder & CEO, Daniel pulled together a dynamic team that transformed a vision into reality.

See the ZWZ Blog post, W2E Announces Columbia, SC Anaerobic Digestion Facility, for details on the planned facility and simplified explanations of anaerobic digesters and methane gas generated in food decomposition.

USCC Prepares for New Era

With the foodservice (and other industries) embracing diversion of organics from landfills to composting and other permitted uses, the U.S. Composting Council has a major role to play as the tides shift from landfill hauling to source-separated organics collection. Effective September 16, 2011 Michael Virga took the helm of the USCC as Executive Director. Visit the ZWZ Blog post, USCC Prepares for New Era, for more details.  Welcome Mike!
