December, 2011 Newsletter ~ Edition 20
WOW - is a perfect description for 2011 as the Ei Team reviews the successes over the past year! It was an amazing year and the stage is set for substantial 2012 ACTION. Read the below newsletter and supporting blog posts to learn about leadership roles taken by sponsors and ZWZ Participants, meetings focused on industry collaboration and a new 2012 focus.
The Ei Team invites you to join the ACTION (and fun!) in the capacity that makes sense for you: a ZWZ Participant, an Ei Sponsor, a ZWZ Ambassador or other avenues available to contribute and make a difference in business operating practices.
Follow the Ei Blogs, The Impact Blog and Zero Waste Zone Blog, to keep current on project status and tales from the journey.
NRA Takes Leadership Role in Industry Collaboration
Collaboration is key to driving sustainability down successful paths - the National Restaurant Association takes a leadership role in creating common ground for organizations to work together. In December, Ei orchestrated and the NRA hosted a series of meetings with complementary trade associations, non-profits and foodservice operators to ground synergies into working relationships.
First on the agenda was an introductory meeting with the U.S. Composting Council and NRA executives. See the ZWZ Blog post, NRA Leads Industry Collaboration, for a meeting overview. The Ei FB album, 12-12-11 NRA-USCC Mtg in D.C. gives a pictorial recap.
Next Ei Founder Holly Elmore and NRA ConServe Program Director Chris Moyer visited HMSHost's corporate offices for an excellent meeting to recap the year and plan for 2012 ACTION. The ZWZ Blog post, HMSHost: A Leader in Sustainability, gives a meeting overview and summary of HMSHost's leadership role.
The meeting series ended in a gathering of non-profits and trade associations with complementary missions in developing sustainable foodservice packaging. Eight organizations spent the day together at the NRA offices. The ZWZ Blog post, Sustainable Foodservice Packaging Meeting, gives a meeting overview, and the Ei FB album, 12-14-11 Sustainable Packaging Meeting @ NRA Offices, gives a pictorial recap.
Affairs to Remember, A Leader with Many Roles
December was a powerful month for Affairs to Remember Caterers. Patrick Cuccaro, ATR GM, was elected to serve a the Georgia Restaurant Association Chair, after serving as Vice-Chair in 2011. With over 25 years in the hospitality industry, Patrick brings expertise, passion and talent to his leadership role. The ZWZ Blog post, ZWZ Champion to Lead GA's Restaurant Industry, gives additional information.
ATR announced in mid December the 200 tons of material diverted from landfills milestone was surpassed. See the ZWZ Blog post, ATL Caterer Hits Major Zero Waste Milestone, for details on the achievement and how the ATR Legacy Program extends sustainability efforts beyond zero waste initiatives.
Ei Computer Crash
During the holidays, the Ei computer crashed and its replacement is in the bureaucracy of the Dell Warranty program. Please be patient with follow-ups and responses. Also, please refrain from sending large files to prevent further issues when the hard drive is loaded into a new computer. Thanks!
The Ei | ZWZ Film Crew Debuts
In early December, Ei Chair Scott Seydel and Holly joined forces for the first time as a film crew at the Sustainable Food Court Initiative Atlanta Airport Pilot. Scott is the film talent and Holly uses her new camera for still shots - a powerful team for Ei communication and educational tools. The ZWZ Blog post, Ei | ZWZ Film Crew Debuts, has additional details.
Get Creative with Re-Use
Before placing anything in a trash can destined for landfill, make a conscious decision to explore if there is a re-use or recycle option available. Old, worn-out cloths, no longer fit for direct donation, may be cut and sewn into eclectic, fun cloths, many times for children. A simple Google search will give options in your community. The ZWZ Blog post, ReUSE for Old, Spent Jeans, gives an option where old, worn-out jeans are sewn into sassy skirts.

The IMPACT Blog post, New Sponsor|New Ei Focus, for additional details.
Kid's Nutrition Takes Center Stage
The NRA teamed with the American Culinary Federation for a survey of nearly 1,800 chefs to understand "What's Hot in 2012." From a food standpoint, kid's nutrition took center stage with local, sustainable products in a strong supporting role. The IMPACT Blog post, Kid's Nutrition Takes Center Stage, gives details on the survey along with the NRA announcement of the Kid's Healthier Fare Pavilion at the 2012 NRA Show.

Every Life Matters
The holiday season is a time to reflect on the abundance within our lives and express gratitude to our family and friends. There are many who live in survival mode and spend the holidays within the elements - some do not survive. The IMPACT Blog post, Every Life Matters, chronicles how Tim Wilson succumbed to the cold on December 10. 2010 while sleeping under a bridge. The fateful bridge was a mere mile plus from Laura Martin's home and propelled her into action. Laura inspired Ei to explore how social responsibility and assisting those less abundant may weave within our programs - stay tuned.
