Elemental Impact
July, 2011 Newsletter ~ Edition 15

Welcome to the Elemental Impact Newsletter

Accelerated ACTION was the theme for July! Read below to learn about impressive national media, Ei meetings|tours, new Ei Sponsors and other activities. The Ei Team invites you to join the ACTION (and fun!) in the capacity that makes sense for you: a ZWZ Participant, an Ei Sponsor, a ZWZ Ambassador or other avenues available to contribute and make a difference in business operating practices.

Follow the Ei Blogs, The Impact Blog and Zero Waste Zone Blog, to keep current on project status and tales from the journey. Note the ZWZ Blog is closing in on 17,000 page views with a global audience!

Ei Receives Impressive National Media Recognition recognized six green leaders in “red” states: Ei founder HollyElmore was one of the six leaders profiled in the July 28 article published on-line. For an overview of the article, including the other five leaders, read the ZWZ Blog post, Honors Green within the Red.

Holly was also quoted in two recent articles by author Alison Lara. The first article is about the National Restaurant Association recycling survey and the second article was inspired by the joint NRA|ZWZ Recycling Integrity: Truths, Myths & Emerging Technologies session at the International Foodservice Sustainability Symposium in May. To learn more about these articles see the ZWZ Blog posts, Recycling Survey Article on and The Recycling Integrity Journey.

Plastic Film Recycling Read to Roll

How thrilling to witness the world's largest plastic bag manufacturer (Hilex Poly) meet with the nation's largest real estate company and mall owner (Simon Property Group) and the nation's largest waste and recycling hauler (Waste Management) to develop systems for recycling the tremendous amount of garment plastic film packaging received in retail stores.

Visit the ZWZ Blog post, Getting a Handle on Plastic Recycling, to learn about the amazing tour of the nation's only plant dedicated to post-consumer plastic bag recycling in North Vernon, IN. View the Ei Facebook album, 07-01-11 Hilex Poly Tour, for a pictorial tour recap.

Stay tuned as the ZWZ Team is determined to find the behind-the-scenes plastic film currently landfill bound and redirect it into recycling programs. With the global leader in plastic bag manufacturing leading the charge, it is bound to be an exciting journey.

U.S. EPA Single-Stream Recycling Webinar

On July 21 the U.S. EPA Sustainable Materials Management Web Academy presented the webinar, Single-Stream Recycling: The Good, the Bad & the Ugly. With the largest waste hauling companies embracing single-stream as their recycling option, the timing is impeccable to address the effectiveness of a system designed for ease of collection.

Visit the ZWZ Blog post, Single-Stream Recycling: The Good, the Bad & the Ugly, for an overview of the webinar and quotes from Robert German’s excellent presentation, Best Practices in Single-Stream Recycling.

NRA Announces Kids Live Well Program

With its announcement this week of the National Restaurant Association's "Kids LiveWell" Initiative in collaboration with Healthy Dining, the NRA is taking the lead in showcasing the importance of the foodservice industry's health impact, especially relating to children.

“Kids LiveWell” is a first-of-its-kind voluntary initiative that shows the restaurant industry’s commitment to offering healthful menu items for children, with a focus on increasing consumption of fruit and vegetables, lean protein, whole grains and low-fat dairy, and limiting unhealthy fats, sugars and sodium. More than 15,000 restaurant locations across the nation participated in the program launch this week
