May 2011 Newsletter ~ Edition 13
In May Ei stayed true to the ACTION theme for 2011. Read below to learn about Ei speaking engagements, new sponsors and other activities. The Ei Team invites you to join the ACTION (and fun!) in the capacity that makes sense for you: a ZWZ Participant, an Ei Sponsor, a ZWZ Ambassador or other avenues available to contribute and make a difference in business operating practices.
Follow the Ei Blogs, The Impact Blog and Zero Waste Zone Blog, to keep current on project status and tales from the journey.
Farewell to Marlin Gottschalk
With great sadness, Ei bids farewell to Marlin Gottschalk, Director of the Sustainability Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. On Monday, May 23, 2011 Marlin said good-bye to this world after a valiant encounter with cancer.
Visit the ZWZ Blog post, Farewell to a Friend, Colleague & Mentor, for my personal tribute to Marlin.
2011 National Restaurant Show
In true collaborative spirit, the National Restaurant Association gave Elemental Impact and Zero Waste Zones strong presence at the 2011 NRA Show May 21-24 in Chicago @ McCormick Place with two key sessions.
• Compost, The Quiet Hero Returns with THE HOW was a grand success in the Saturday, May 21 educational session. The Quiet Hero Spokesperson, Holly Elmore was joined by The Chris Triad for the session. Read the ZWZ Blog post, Compost, The Quiet Hero @ the 2011 NRA Show, for details on The Quiet Hero’s encore performance.
• During prime show time on Sunday, May 22, Ei founder Holly Elmore gave an overview of Ei initiatives at the Conserve Solutions Center during a scheduled session. For details, read the IMPACT Blog post, Ei @ Conserve Solutions Center During NRA Show.

IFSS: Inaugural Event a Success
With Chris Moyer of the NRA Conserve Program and Chris Koetke of Kendall College teaming with Cindy Railing to create the inaugural International Foodservice Sustainability Symposium, success was the inevitable outcome. An impressive crowd attended the symposium and enjoyed an excellent program. Kendall College treated attendees to an excellent reception and dinner on the opening evening. The Ei Facebook IFFS Album
has an array of photos from the event.
Recycling Integrity: Truths, Myths & Emerging Technologies, a new Ei speaking topic, debuted at the event to an attentive crowd. Read the ZWZ Blog post, Recycling Integrity @ IFSS – the Chris & Holly Show with an Added Buzz
, for session details. Visit the Ei Speaking Engagements
page to download the PPT presentation.
Restaurant Recycling Survey
The National Restaurant Association partnered with Georgia Pacific on a survey of restaurateurs about the importance of recycling to operations and profits. With impressive results on operator enthusiasm to participate in recycling programs, the survey also indicates the consumer prefers to spend dining dollars at establishments that walk the talk.
Visit the ZWZ Blog post, RECYCLING FOR ALL THE RIGHT RETURNS, for more detailed information and links to the research fact sheets and executive summary. The ZWZ Blog post, ZWZ in NRA Recycling Brochure! Thanks Chris Moyer for including the ZWZ-Join link in the new NRA recycling brochure.
A ZWZ Icon Resurfaces
When Dave Rossman, former Doubletree Buckhead GM, was transferred to Tampa, the Atlanta greenie community mourned its loss. Atlanta’s loss was Tampa’s gain. Read the ZWZ Blog post, An Atlanta Icon Resurfaces in Tampa, where Holly reconnects with Dave in Tampa. Fertile seeds were planted for bringing zero waste initiatives to the Tampa Bay area.
Suzanne Burnes Joins Sustainable Atlanta
Effective June 01, Suzanne Burnes joins Sustainable Atlanta as Executive Director. Ei knows Suzanne well from her days as Assistant Director at the Sustainability Division of the GA Department of Natural Resources. Sustainable Atlanta is certain to reach new dimensions of influence and impact under Suzanne's strong leadership.
Welcome Suzanne! Know you can count on Ei and Zero Waste Zones to support you and Sustainable Atlanta in whatever capacity possible.
